JCook30.JPGBase Piece - May 1966148 viewsJoe notes to family back home: "These guys are members of the Base Piece Section; we do most of the firing. On all adjustment missions, we fire the BP. It is set over Battery Center. 10,000 rounds shot in Vietnam. This round (foreground) was shot at a suspected VC campsite. The whole battery fired it".

JCook42.JPGField Entertainment141 viewsSgt Cook does a "Napoleon" pose seated next to an unknown star in the entertainment world. But, thanks to Danny Yates, he now knows that it is Diane McBain sitting next to him. She is wearing the same outfit she wore while visiting Danny Yates' battery. The arm of Tippi Hedren can be seen next to the Battery Commander. Seated next to Joe is Cpl William C. Tyler, based on the name placed on his helmet liner.

JCook19.JPG"Base Camp" - Jan 1966138 views"Base Camp" - We arrived on Jan 1966 (by Starlifter - C-141 on dirt runway) and as you see we are the only one in the area ('B' Battery 2/9 Field Artillery). We only called it "Base Camp" and by February we we in the 'boonies' and never saw Base Camp again. In Jan and Feb of 1966 we ONLY had tents. When I came back in (to rotate out) Dec 1966 there were walkways and wooden barracks and Mess hall.
This hole is where we later put in two CONEXs and made our FDC bunker. Left to Right: Sp4 James McBrayer, Jr, PFC Richard A. Williams.
